‘When the City Teaches the Camera’, revisits ‘ACTION! On the Real City’, an experimental course they taught at ETH Zurich’s Department of Architecture. Situated within the lineage of 'expanded cinema', the course employed sensory and cinematic ethnography, digital animation, real-time visualisation technologies and sound to investigate and learn with urban environments. Treating filmmaking as a form of inquiry rather than as a representational tool, the chapter traces how the course's teaching format challenged students to think through site based, sensory investigation, and from outputs to processes: listening, assembling, and restituting. Reflecting on both successes and frictions, the authors argue for processual, sensory forms of knowledge that make urban rhythms and conflicts legible and guide action across changing media ecologies. An approach in which the camera thinks with the city and the classroom opens onto sites, communities, and collective practices.
